AUCTION RELISTS

Its a while since I last did an auction but was looking to to some today and I'm sure there was a tick box on the listing form that auto relisted up to 4 times if unsold. But I cant find it today.

Has it been finished?

I'm using a desktop not the app or a tablet so should see all functions.

You can automatically relist auctions for up to 8 times,  and yes,  it's nicely hidden.

To the right of Pricing >>  Format go far right and click on the 2 tiny wavy lines ' see pricing options'.

From drop down menu there,  you'll see Auto relist up to 8 times.

Apart from inflating the total amount of  auction items for sale in what ever category, why does anyone think that if an item fails to sell on its first auction listing, then why should the same succeed the second, third up to eighth time?

Is there any costs involved in re-listing? If mine dont sell they go elsewhere so i know not on costs.

As a buyer id love to be able to view just virgin outings, but i havent even bothered to ask that question (the amount of live listings numbers would not look too rosy, without relists).

I assume statistics on the value of re-listing an item is not produced by ebay, although they must know the numbers.

If an item fails to sell the first time it might be because nobody was searching for that particular item at the time. For example somebody might have a DVD of an old movie that is out of production and they list it for auction but nobody bids so it gets relisted for another week. In the meantime a conversation or a clip on youtube or something else makes me want to buy a copy of that DVD, I then search EBay and find that relisted auction and I put a bid in and possibly win the auction without knowing if it is the first time listed or the eighth.

I know I have personally had an item listed on auction and nobody bid and relisted it the following week and someone bid on it and bought it.

Ok - thanks for that view and experience.

So its maybe a coincidence or luck why it sold then, rather than something special by ebay listings?

So watchers (?)or bidders will be a low number id imagine then.

I can see that working more by Set Sale rather than auction.

Horses for courses, glad it works for you.

"So its maybe a coincidence or luck why it sold then"

Think this applies to everything on Ebay

Out of interest, what % of buyers do you have that are regular ones?

Auctions have a finite end , and as such do you manage your potential customers to your listings, maybe from off site?

Relying on ebay to bring in customers is rather problematic, especially when considering the Search functions, and more recently the inability to combine items to save on Postage.

I regualrly list auctions finishing on Sunday evenings.

It has been pretty quiet recently On Sunday 7th July, I had a particularly bad evening, bringing in the princely sum of £32 (literally my worst Sunday, ever.)

I decided it would be pointless posting new listings to end on Sunday 14th, just in case England made the final, so I just re-listed the ones which failed to sell the previous week. It was still a (very) quiet week, but I did make a little over £70.

Re-listing auctions isn't something I do often, but there can be good reasons for doing so, although I accept I was lucky this week.

Thanks for your interesting thoughts.

A couple of questions stimulated by your response please.

Do you feel that the difference between your £32 and £70 + sales were down to mix of products, or missed buyers somehow?

Do you have 'regular' buyers ? i dont know exactly how ebay measure this, but the figures they show seem inverted somehow - as i have nurtured repeat customers, quite a few over many years even, it makes it easier to show to them whats being auctioned via off site media.

Recently ive had more unsold items (from 1 item a month to 2 per week) - again im not sure if its mix, general economic reasons, or ebay exposure - the check out failings and end time jumps that are normal with ebay now certainly dont help. The items that dont sell, usually find a place in my set sales else where- never re-listed.

Looking at your listings, we are operating in completely different markets. The vast majority of the items I list are pretty run-of-the-mill. I would never expect to sell over about 30% of my auction listings in any one week nowadays, unless it was a week when I featured only Beatles items, for example.

I don't think there was any particular reason for the better (OK, less bad) sales this Sunday.

A year ago I had far more repeat buyers than I have now, and far more buyers (repeat or new) who would buy maybe a dozen or more albums at a time. I have various theories about that, but that's not what this post is about, and has been covered in dozens of other threads.

As a private seller i list all my stuff on auction, sometimes they sell, sometimes they do not.  It does not cost me anything to list so i just auto relist and most things sell eventually.  I am not in a rush, am not desperate for the money and my other alternate is the car boot which usually gets me less and again you do not always sell there on the first time.   I had something on for about 2 years now and it sold a few weeks ago.  Obviously if i had to pay i would not be bothering.  I also do not do the promotions either or anything else that costs me extra.  After all who would have thought that old photos of planes (and my brother smoked!) would actually sell.   That is the joy of e bay you can find practically anything (although i must admit that the current search engine is not the easiest to navigate)

My practice is, if say I listed an auction with a starting price of £9.99 and it got no bids, I re-list with a starting bid of say £4.99.  Quite often it then sells for more than £9.99.
