6th August

So 6th August is when everything is supposed to switch to Simple Delivery, even existing listings. Not sure how that will work because I don't have dimensions or weights listed for any of my items. It will also be the day I take down my listings if it becomes mandatory and I can see myself buying very little in the future on ebay becuse the funds won't be there from sales. How to ruin a decent selling platform...

Re: 6th August

If the seller was previously posting a porcelain lamp at their own risk, knowing that damage wouldn’t be covered by the carrier insurance, why is it such a sticking point now with simple delivery?

If eBay / the carrier refused to pay out, the seller is no worse off than before?

Re: 6th August

The issue is that SD may specifically NOT cover what the carrier DOES.

Re: 6th August

To confirm my understanding of a couple of points:

Kat at ebay confirmed on this forum that despite what ebay's SD T&Cs state, items on a carrier's excluded items lists WOULD still be covered by Simple Delivery compensation. We were therefore asking if the T&Cs could be updated to confirm this in writing, so we have peace of mind of this being the case.

To answer Technthread....jeez really? Ok, so we're now forced to use SD (unless we undertake a work around). However, previously, before Simple Delivery came in, I could choose to send out an item from a restricted list, via a particularly chosen carrier, and choose to have added insurance to make sure that item was now protected. Now with SD in place, unless we undertake a work around, that option has been taken away (i.e. SD does not allow for an alternative upgrade to the insurance). We potentially have to send out items which we're not 100% sure if they're covered or not.

Does that make sense? Essentially, at the moment there's confusion and uncertainty whether SD truly does cover you for a whole host of items...or not! However, VinylScott says he knows the answer and who's covering this extended compensation. So we're keen to know.

Re: 6th August

It’s not a great username is it. It fit better with what this eBay store used to look like, nowadays it makes no sense. I’ll change it, some of you private sellers have some more business sounding usernames that I could learn from.

There are some issues with simple delivery in that many users of it shouldn’t be on a private account and using it at all. Updating the T&C’s in the way you want opens up a lot of other risks with users who like to break terms of service at every opportunity.

Re: 6th August

....just to confirm:

"Updating the T&C’s in the way you want" should actually read "Updating the T&C’s in the way ebay market SD as working and the way in which ebay representatives state it works".

Otherwise we have uncertainty as to what's covered and what's not. Hence people are hugely concerned with using SD. However, as stated, VinylScot apparently has the answers, so we're waiting on his response here!

Re: 6th August

I may be looking at this wrong but I’ll spit it out and people can take it for what it is.

Seller A sends a valuable vase and it is smashed into a hundred pieces. They are a private seller, they don’t package for a living they are just clearing out the loft. They made a mistake, eBay understand this and their practice is to refund the buyer and seller and write that off. Their T&C’s are loose enough so they can use discretion.

Seller B is a business with a thousand vases for sale, they clear the local auction house out every month. They have decided to sell on a private account, no fees and eBay confirm in black and white that they are covered for all damage of items that would be on an exclusion list. Not only that they can post for half the price if they get it right and rinse the system for as long as possible. The seller gets lazy and to cut corners they spend less on packaging. Why not, overheads are reduced and eBay foot the bill no questions asked. Not only that they tell people don’t be selling on a business account you’re stupid, do what I do. Do you see the issues there?

I’m heading out I have no more to add on this topic now it isn’t my problem and becoming a drain.

Re: 6th August

Couple of very specific examples there!

I was just merely dealing with general Simple Delivery use for legit Private Sellers, not covering the added complexity of bringing in the factor of businesses incorrectly setting up Private Seller accounts to take advantage of areas where SD can be exploited. That's a whole different kettle of fish.

I still have no idea if I, a legit private seller, was to send a well packaged lamp through SD, if it got lost by Evri, would it be covered and who would assess and cover that....ebay or Evri?

Have a fab time out today Technthread. Thanks also for announcing your departure and lack of interest going forward. TBH - I'm just waiting to hear back from VinylScot who should be able to clear this all up for us once and for all.

'I still have no idea if I, a legit private seller, was to send a well packaged lamp through SD, if it got lost by Evri, would it be covered and who would assess and cover that....ebay or Evri?'

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think the T's and C's have been amended somewhere in the bible-thick layer of bumpf we are all supposed to read and absorb everytime something changes.

This amendment says something along the lines of   "when the carriers'  terms are in opposition to the S.D.  terms (in matters of whether or not items are covered for loss or damage) it will be the S.D. terms that will prevail"

i.e. if an item is on the Evri/RM 'excluded form compo' list,  but is included in the S.D. system, if this item is lost/damaged it *should* be covered by ebay.    🙂

This relieves my mind a little, but it doesn't relieve the deep distrust I have of 'small print' in general.  (there's bound to be some get-outs in there somewhere....)

And the even deeper distrust I have now developed in ebay.

The compo for *lost* items should be fairly straight-forward. (An item gets delivered or it doesn't!)

But I have difficulty believing that compo for damage in the post will be quite that easy.  After all, packaging is the only responsibility left in the hands of the actual seller.

Some sellers may give up taking packaging seriously,  as they don't get specifically paid for it (now P+ *P* is history) and ebay say they'll pay for breakages.

Will ebay get fed up with compensating sellers who post a porcelaine vase in a paddy-bag? 😂

Re: 6th August

Lucy - this was a great response. Thank you! Cheers for the excellent update. I was unaware the T&Cs had been updated with that extra wording!

The reason I'm so interested is because I previously had a bad experience with Evri when they lost (not damaged but lost) a Grow Light for plant growing (not an illumination lamp but a special £130 lamp for growing plants from seeds with). Anyway, because "lamps and lights" are on Evri's excluded items list, they only refunded me for the postage and not compensation for them losing the item. Frustratingly, they state "damaged" in their response, but it wasn't damaged at all, but lost entirely.

Therefore, the residing sour taste in my mouth from this incident meant that should it be Evri assessing and covering any compensation requests, then I'd be less inclined to believe any items on their extensive "excluded items list" would be covered by Simple Delivery.  Hence I'm keen to know who's providing the cover...ebay or the carrier. But as of yet, I'm still not sure!

Re: 6th August

Absolutely!!! I completely agree. I complained about their decision, but alas, the decision was upheld and so I only received a refund for the P&P, nothing for the item they lost. As such, I stopped trusting Evri and went Royal Mail only.

I also no longer hold much trust in ebay, due to how they've been handling a lot of their changes with a lack of transparency an an unwillingness to answer even the most basic of questions. Therefore, I'm only really comfortable if it's Royal Mail making any assessments upon claims.

As such, I'm now seeking to find out who makes these assessments and then provides the compensation...ebay or the carrier. VinylScott says he has the answer...so I'm keeping a close eye on this thread.

Re: 6th August

Ebays AI will guess the size and weight of your item ..it will be their “recommendation”

If it turns out your item is bigger or heavier just use the label they provide and if it’s wrong it’s not your problem , they pick up the tab  (your item can’t be more than 20kg or bigger than medium parcel though)

if your item is smaller or lighter than they say you can revise their recommendation so as not to overcharge the buyer ie say they put medium parcel 1-2kg £5.15 when  you know your item won’t be any bigger than small £3.38 or 0-1kg medium  £3.64

etc

if you have items that are sent in an envelope normally for 87p or LL £1.55 (postcards, DVDs, jewellery, most small light items priced £10 and under normally exempt from simple delivery) and they change it to  tracked postage LL 2.72  (not impossible but let’s see) check if your items are actually supposed to be exempt from simple delivery and if they are  revise the listing back to where it should be

got a headache now

basically , whatever they do ,you have to go through every item and double check that they’ve done it right ..or wrong …and take it from there

Hope some of that made sense

Re: 6th August

Sorry, I'm confused why you've written all of this?! Were you replying to a different post or something?

We're discussing compensation for lost/damaged items here. Trying to get to the bottom of who provides the compensation in an the event something gets lost or damaged...

Re: 6th August

Ignore it

im confused too

i was replying to someone who asked what is going to happen on 6 august to their listings …they asked how will eBay know how to price the postage seeing as they hadn’t input size or weight ..I must have clicked the wrong thread to respond to ,soz

eta it was actually to the OP 🤣

must go and have a lie down then because I’m posting too much and not keeping track

I normally click on the reply to the post button and not on the generic reply  button but must  have not done so here

Re: 6th August

Believe it or not, I don't live on these forums. I have a life.

I'm not going to rise to the bait. The answers to all your queries are all there to be found in eBay's t's and c's and in the literature relating to SD. I am not your nursemaid.

Re: 6th August

Oh man! Not sure what's gotten your knickers in a twist.

Sorry, I just couldn't find an answer to which party is responsible for assessing the claims and then provides the compensation, ebay or the carrier.

I certainly don't need a nursemaid and I certainly don't think you should spend your life in these forums. Not sure why you jumped to those conclusions. Although, I think we can all read between the lines and draw our own conclusions from the above highly entertaining response upon your knowledge and understanding about the matter.

This made me chuckle so, so, so much. Thanks dude, you're awesome!

Have a good one VinylGuy : )

I really can't understand your attitude.

If you spent half as much time researching your alleged issues, as you do trying to bait me into an online argument, your problems would all be resolved by now.

Re: 6th August

Oh you are awesome. Thank you.

I've done my research, and alas, I came up with blanks. Honestly, the T&Cs and other such literature don't seem to cover which party is responsible for the compensation and assessment upon the claims. It's left very open and vague, which is unusal...

Let's be frank, I think what we have here is someone who thought he knew all the answers, chose to come across all dismissive to others' questions, later realised he didn't actually know the answers, and is too darn proud to admit it. I will however admit, that I kind of knew that would probably be the case from the start, as no answer to these questions seems to have been provided, but I wanted to see if you'd be up front and open about it, or doubledown and contunie being dismissive.

I'm pleased to say you absolutely smashed it sir. Brilliant fun and made my afternoon. So thank you.

I think we should probably leave it at that, unless you have anything else to add maybe? Obviously I hope so...as the banter here has been most enjoyable : )

Re: 6th August

Last Day of Custom Postage.

Will eBay cancel my CP listings or illegally alter them without my consent?

Think we know the answer to that one.
