Read that in Q1 of 2025 all private sellers will have to use 'managed shipments' and it will no longer be an opt in type affair.
I thought managed shipments were where you printed the label off via ebay directly, but the same article said that managed shipments are currently implemented as opt in for second hand clothing, so it doesn't appear to be the same thing but something different?
Would anyone know what this is and what it involves? Just curious, doesnt seem to be applying to us business sellers

Did you read that on the site that used to be Tamebay? They do often get things wrong!
The only reference on ebay is in the new Payment Terms of Use, which just says they recommend using Simple Delivery for private sellers to get their money 'quicker'.

This part:
"With managed shipping, we are completely overhauling our shipping experience for C2C sellers in the UK in two phases. The first phase completed in early October, extended the simplified shipping experience we first rolled out in pre-owned apparel to all categories. Within the new native listing flow, UK C2C sellers now see a consolidated list of shipping options based on the estimated package size and weight. And since implementing this change, we have observed a significant reduction in time spent on shipping in a listing flow.
The second phase of managed shipping; radically simplifies the experience and creates a new revenue stream for eBay. Similar to managed payments and eBay international shipping, Managed shipping leverages our scale and expertise to create a better experience for customers while generating incremental revenue and operating income dollars. When listing eligible products sellers simply confirm the pre-selected package size and eBay handles the rest.
Buyers received competitive shipping rates and sellers are fully protected against loss or damage. Managed shipping is currently live for C2C pre-owned apparel listing in the UK. In Q4, we plan to expand managed shipping horizontally on an opt-out basis, before mandating the program for eligible items listed by U.C2C sellers during Q1 of 2025.
In addition to shipping, we launched a number of enhancements to the local pickup experience in the UK. As these transactions make up a significant portion of our C2C TAM in this market, we increased local supply by defaulting new C2C listings to offer both pickup and shipping options. We created a new eBay local landing page and map view for optimal browsing of nearby inventory".
It doesn't say it's mandatory, but that doesn't mean it won't be!

'before mandating the program for eligible items listed by U.C2C sellers during Q1 of 2025.'
This sounds compulsory to me? Do you think it means something else? (genuine question)

It does rather, but it depends on what they mean by eligible items!

@papso22 @vintagefunk01 unfortunately, as you can see in the part quoted above, Jamie didn't give specific details but if you combine that with some if the information from the slides in eBay's earnings presentation, you get a little more context to draw possible conclusions from.
eBay's stock price dropped a bit after that call, mostly due to the fact that eBay provided weaker guidance for Q4 revenue than they had previously given - and that expectation for lower revenue in Q4 was primarily driven by the consumer to consumer (C2C) initiatives in the UK (fee-free private selling) and the fact that they had not yet "remonetized" those sales with buyer fees and mandatory managed shipping.
You can see by this slide their "context" for lower revenue included "minimal contribution from UK Managed Shipping in Q4" - the unspoken other side of that coin when taken with Jamie's other comments is that the lower revenue will be temporary since they expect to drop the "minimal" part by starting to ramp up auto-opt in for some sellers in Q4 and then making it mandatory for "eligible" items from private sellers in Q1.
Given that they have positioned this to investors as not just a break even deal, but something they expect to be a revenue/profit center - my totally wild, but fairly educated guess is eligibility will be determined primarily by whether or not eBay can make money on the shipment. 😉
In all seriousness though, as @sml192 said, what they are talking about is what eBay is calling Simple Delivery and the help and policy pages for Simple Delivery already list eligibility criteria.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/sellercentre/postage/simple-delivery
https://www.ebay.co.uk/help/selling/posting-items/setting-postage-options/simple-delivery?id=5575
What listings are eligible for Simple Delivery?
Simple Delivery is currently available to private sellers in the UK selling:
- Clothing items that have a ‘Buy it Now’ price, auction starting price, or reserve price of £500 or less
- Items in all other eligible categories that have a 'Buy it Now' price, auction starting price, or reserve price of £750 or less
- Items (once packaged) within the following dimensions and maximum weight:
- For shop drop-off: where no side exceeds 120cm in length, the volume is no more than 245cm and the package is up to 20kg. To calculate the volume: add together the two shortest sides and multiply it by two, and then add the length.
- For locker drop-off: 61cm x 46cm x 46cm and the package is up to 15kg.
Authenticity Guarantee and bulky listings are currently excluded from Simple Delivery.
The help pages also go on to give the usual exclusions for most shipping carriers of various prohibited/restricted/hazardous items.
So I would expect at least initially when this becomes mandatory for private sellers in Q1, that eligibility criteria will likely apply and they may make changes over time to try to figure out how to get more items included in the program if/when it makes sense from a revenue and risk/reward perspective.

I would be interested to know the answer to this important question too ?
I have a gut feeling that you won't get a say in what postal service eBay uses on your behalf which is not very good as you should at least have the right to say what postal service you wish your expensive item to be sent with and definitely NOT Evri !!! who seem to just leave parcels on door steps or in wheelie bins irresponsibly without due care or any consideration of ringing the door bell !

Judging from the number of threads on these boards detailing problems people have had with the current arrangement for supplying postage via the ebay system, they are going to have to do a lot of work to get it up to a suitably satisfactory standard to be able to force it on eveyone.
If ebay are going to take mandatory control of the shipping, I am pretty sure they will also be legally responsible for each package once it is in the hands of whatever carrier they have chosen, so any liability for refund or compensation after between collection and delivery will be their responsibility to sort out with the carrier, not the responsibility of the sender.

I'm not sure that eBay won't clarify this in the Terms we agree to when we use the service: you might find that your obligations are unchanged. I suspect what the company is trying to do is establish a uniform expectation for consumers so that they know what buying from eBay will be like just as they know what using John Lewis or Aldi or the other shops they use regularly are like.

I so hope not. AI descriptions can give us a clue to what points eBay think buyers are interested in but reading them is a numbing experience: those "killer" phrases become boring and take insincerity to a "whole next level".
