When I started on ebay in 2008 I sent first few items out none tracked.
A couple of buyers claimed not received.
So I changed over to RM signed for.
Since then only had one parcel go missing out of thousands.
So either RM are careless with none tracked or buyers are trying it on.
So I make them pay for signed.

RM Signed For isn't tracked 😉
It merely requires a signature at the point of delivery; between you posting it and its arrival at the destination address you have no clue as to where it is.
As brainuk says, you need Tracked 48 to be able to follow the package through the system.
If they were to apply standard tracking to everything, you will see the price rise to the same level as the tracked services anyway (you are definitely not going to get tracking applied for the same price as non-tracked no matter what), so why not just send tracked to start with?.
I think you would also see a noticeable slowdown in delivery times if absolutely everything was being scanned and logged at every point of its journey.
Currently anything sent as Large Letter or larger and has a Horizon/Royal Mail label is supposed to be scanned and logged at the point of delivery, although I know some posties don't seem to be doing this still, and sometimes the scan doesn't work correctly.

Isn't everything automated at some point or more anyway ? scanned addresses are forced via manual labour if illegible and this was done when it was pennies for a stamp, let alone today.

just in the last week 2 of my items were not scanned using their tracked service so I am stuck waiting 14 days for my money
