Delivery drivers in general are under a lot of pressure to delivery many packages quickly. In my area, one way they meet their targets is to mark things 'delivered' today, but actually bring the package tomorrow. Another is to deliver on time, but to the wrong address! It seems like marking things 'attempted' (when you know they weren't) is another way to ease the pressure. Although frustrating, I think I prefer the latter.
