i HAVE USED EBAY FOR AROUND 30 YEARS around 20 years with my current details and previously in the early days around 10 years with different sign in name which incorporated a house name from which we moved!
Anyway as from now I have ceased to use Ebay as I do not agree with the NEW!! payment system
Nothing leaves my premises until it is paid for, thats a similar system that the retail trade uses isnt it??
One does not enter a shop and select what they wish to purchase, tell the shopkeaper I will send you the payment in a few days time and leave with the goods.
I have spoken to other eBay users I know all of whom are totally against this system and will not be selling!
EBAY you need to wake up quickly and sort out this matter!

I agree similar situation using eBay for decades. This is the last straw. I’ve had items delivered and they still keep hold of the money. They are just holding money to make profits on the bank balance. I’d rather just pay the fees like before.

I contacted customer service at eBay ..even though the buyer had confirmed receipt and left good feedback, they would not manually release the funds. Total joke ...people will be leaving in droves . I'm now waiting for Royal Mail to update the tracking, which takes at least 5 days.
But on a positive front I'm gonna take up evays Mantra and go to butchers for some fillet of beef and pay them 2 days after I've eaten it

"How much interest are they earning with the money held on account!!!! Must be thousands of £££££."
I set up a little spreadsheet, assuming an interest rate of 4% ebay earn 1.1p a day for every £100 they hold. If we knew how many private UK sellers there were and their turnover, we could work out the CEO's new bonus in March 2026!

According to my accountant there is nothing illegal about using a private Ebay account to sell goods for profit on Ebay, as long as you are declaring all sales and other income to HMRC as I do.
So for anybody to suggest that a private seller is using such an account to avoid paying tax is infact potentially slander.

Well l give up, second call to customer services today about items delivered but Royal Mail tracking says still in transit, one item has feedback but wont release funds, maybe holding for 14 days, overall have had to contact them 7 times since new system came in , getting tired of seeing funds on hold and releasing small amounts , not listing any thing else until it changes and not buying on another account l have with them , same comments are happening on thier Facebook advert on the news feed, everyone saying the same as on here.

That is correct, as long as you comply with the other legalities ie. consumer law etc... it is just eBay policy for Business accounts.
But as we know ebay are not pushing to remove big private accounts who are actually businesses ( they are going after the little ones) and haven't for years because they are aware, in my opinion.

Trading is trading. You do not have to identify as a business to trade. Trade is also "free". So a private seller is a "trader" who is levy/tax/fee exempt.
They are delaying private sellers payments to "justify" charging business sellers a fee, but im sure this is illegal.

Im sure this is illegal as Ebay are delaying payouts, but immediately taking postage label and promoted ad fees out of available balance so when the funds for one item are eventually released the backlog of postage label and promoted ad fess depletes these funds and you have nothing to show for your transaction.
If the funds for each item are pending then so should be the postage label and promoted ad fee until funds are released. This appears to be a certain type of fraud.

So you are happy to undercut Ebay business sellers who are trading on the correct account, paying fees to keep this site operating?
If you are declaring your earnings, what is the big problem operating on the correct account? Obviously the answer is to avoid fees and consumer rights.
Maybe worth changing accountant as clearly giving out the wrong advice
This is one of the reasons the new rules have been brought in.

This new payment system is a total shambles.
It persecutes private sellers such as myself as we have to wait nigh on a week for the money we've earned.
And as somebody who's partially relying on this money to get by, this is causing me considerable anxiety.

Really don't like this, Royal Mail are not good enough to rely on, I send tracked and it doesn't get marked as tracked. Waiting 14 days when you just sold something to buy some food/gas, as was out of money.

You are not a trader when selling personal possessions as determined by HMRC...@derrick415
Edit to add HMRC Image.

To go with the sales data ebay has to provide to HMRC. That doesn't necessarily mean you owe tax on the sales though.

sold an item, item has been with the buyer for two days and Ebay still haven't released the money they owe me.
