vat and private sellers

I am a private seller.I have used ebay to sell items I have collected and  owned for years (So all second hand). They are sold within the U.K. None of them have been specifically purchased for resale, and many are years or decades old. Ebay requested I give them my N.I. number so they can comply with tax laws.  I provided this and now I find my recent sold items have had v.a.t. applied to them ! I had already reduced my prices to lessen the impact on potential buyers from the much unloved buyer protection fee,and now I find they are being charged tax on a used item supplied by a private seller. This surely can not be right ?

You are not being charged VAT on your items.

But, ebay charge buyers a fee, 4% + 75p.

This amount includes VAT.

Even if you import used items from outside UK, you will still pay VAT.

Thank you. Just to clarify then. Ebay are charging V.A.T. on the fees they charge buyers across the board not the actual items procured. Prior to buyer protection fees introduction my buyers would not have to pay this tax. As mentioned my sales were of second hand items. The only ones sold that had not already had v.a.t. charged on them when purchased new by me  were manufactured before v.a.t. was even introduced in 1973.  In any the case I am struggling to understand what new benefits the buyer is receiving over and above what rights they already had, especially if they are now paying v.a.t. on all of their purchases on the platform.

They are not paying VAT on all their purchases on the platform.

They pay VAT when they buy from VAT registered sellers, and VAT on fees charged to them by ebay, and VAT on some postage costs.

I`m not vat registered and am not a business,I understand what your saying I think.  So buyers are paying vat on fees charged to them by ebay, along with some on postage (presumably on the simple delivery postage purchased via the platform.)
But which items then are exempt from buyers fees and thereby exempt from vat ?  I thought the buyer protection fees applied to all items ?
