I am a private seller.I have used ebay to sell items I have collected and owned for years (So all second hand). They are sold within the U.K. None of them have been specifically purchased for resale, and many are years or decades old. Ebay requested I give them my N.I. number so they can comply with tax laws. I provided this and now I find my recent sold items have had v.a.t. applied to them ! I had already reduced my prices to lessen the impact on potential buyers from the much unloved buyer protection fee,and now I find they are being charged tax on a used item supplied by a private seller. This surely can not be right ?

You are not being charged VAT on your items.
But, ebay charge buyers a fee, 4% + 75p.
This amount includes VAT.
Even if you import used items from outside UK, you will still pay VAT.

They are not paying VAT on all their purchases on the platform.
They pay VAT when they buy from VAT registered sellers, and VAT on fees charged to them by ebay, and VAT on some postage costs.
