set up as a Cic non profit but not a charity help

Hi

Can anyone help me please? I need to set up as a CIC non profit - which is not a charity so i don't have a charity number. we are limited by guarentee not shares CIC. the setup will not allow us to go forward without a charity number but we are not a private business for profit either.

can anyone help us out please?

What setup are you referring to?

The account you're posting on is a business account.

Hi 

Thank you for responding. yes i had to set it up as a business account to at least get on to the community boards to ask for help. i either need to change it or set up again in the right way.  

So we are a non profit organisation but not a charity - we are a Community interest company - not for profit.  so not being a charity we do not have a Charity number and so during the set up it will not allow us to move on from that question and continue with set up. but we aren't a normal business either.

i'm not sure what the right route is or how we set up?

You'd just register as a business if you're an organisation, which you've done. 

If you're not registered as a charity then you're not a charity.

What else is it that you're trying to do with your eBay account? Can you screenshot and post here (use the photo icon above the message box) the section where you're getting stuck?

thank you- yes, not a charity. but equally we are a not for profit social enterprise. so i didn't know if there was a benefit/advantage or a need to register as a not for profit. if there is no difference then i'll keep it as a business account.

The government web site describes CICs as limited companies which operate to provide a benefit to the community they serve. They are not charities and do not get the same tax breaks as charities. Quote "A CIC operates in the same way as any other company".

It seems to me that you have acted correctly as registering as a business. A CIC would not be eligible to registr as a charity on eBay.
