I am not sure what you mean by the grading system.  The condition, for example 'refurbished - very good', is decided by the seller.

If you are looking to buy an a refurbished item with the 'blue tick' and 'Refurbished on eBay', you can read all of the details in the link below.

You are still dealing with the seller as you buy from them, not Ebay, and you are covered for 30 days from receipt by the Money Back Guarantee.

If you want to make a claim after that, using the 12 month refurbished guarantee, you need to keep the details the seller sends at the time of purchase and check carefully what is covered for that item by that seller.

I am not sure how you would spot a 'bad refurb' - best bet is to check the seller's recent feedback, especially feedback which relates to the product you plan to buy.

Remember, you are still buying a secondhand item from an online seller and if anything goes wrong after 30 days, you would have to pursue the issue with the seller.  Read the details:

If used properly, eBay's grading system for refurbs provides a good and clear description of what you should get.

But as always when buying from unknown sellers on eBay, sellers may misuse it. The user agreement even warns buyers that eBay does not guarantee that sellers' descriptions will be truthful or accurate.

Rather than trying to spot bad refurbs, concentrate on reducing the risk by buying only from established sellers with a solid record of good feedback.

Also, read eBay's money back guarantee and make sure you understand the important conditions - the payment methods that qualify for protection and the 30 day time limit to open a case (never let sellers string you along with promses until it's too late to open one!). For details, see: https://pages.ebay.co.uk/ebay-money-back-guarantee/

Always remember that buying on eBay isn't like buying from the shops. However careful you are, it's never risk free.
