outbid after auction ended

I left a max bid on an item and watched as the time ran down. At last few seconds, as usual someone put a late bid in. The difference here is that the winning bid at the end was lower than my max bid. Later when I checked the sale the winning bid has changed to a higher price. Is someone being allowed to bid after the auction ends?

Was it that the buyer protection fee was automatically added onto the item price at the end?

No they are not.  You are simply seeing the confusing ways ebay presents bids with the buyer protection fee.
