fitted car parts that don't work

I bought a fuel sender unit from an ebay seller for £90. It was fitted last Monday at a cost of £200. It has stopped the fuel leak, but the float arm does not work so  have no idea how much fuel I have.  So - the part does not work. I cannot send it back as it is fitted in my car. I cannot afford to pay another £200 to remove it and have my car without a sender unit for the 10 days that it took for the part to arrive from China. What are my rights and what can  I do to sort this out?

Provided you're within the 30 day time limit (from the date of delivery) you can open a case under eBay's money back guarantee. If the item was sent from China you may (or may not) be expected to return it to China at your own cost. If the seller demands this post here again (because the answer is a bit complicated!)

If it's already beyond eBay's 30 day time limit your payment provider e.g. credit or debit card may be able to halp.

eBay does not cover consequential loss, i.e. the cost of having this fitted. If the seller had been a UK seller you could have consdered using the Online Civil Money Claims (OCMC) service. But as they're in China this isn't an option.

So even if seller says they will refund on return, then it will cost you another £200 to get a £90 refund, IF they even refund.

Choosing to get a part from China is never very wise, cheap tat, maybe ok, but an essential part for a car is just asking for problems.

In my opinion buying car parts yourself & then getting garage to fit them is risky, as you found out.

Better to let garage supply & fit items, that way any issues have to sorted by them.
