can sellers sell to someone else after accepting my offer

I made a offer on a item.  The offer was accepted. But before I could pay for it the item I got  a screen that said the item was that the item was gone. Can a seller sell to someone else after accepting my offer? Tha doesnt seem right to me.

Simple answer is Yes.

Ebay changed system recently In that item is still live until you pay for it.

Yes, they can.

Ebay has only made this change recently.  If the seller accepts your offer, the item remains for sale until you pay.  So, another buyer can step in and buy the item.

If the seller had set their account up to get paid immediately, the item would be sold and they would be paid without any input from the seller.

I can see that this is another Ebay change which buyers won't like.

yes, I agree. it was only 3 hours between the time my offer was accepted and it was sold
