buying from Japanese vendor in uk

if i buy a sound mixer costing £176 from a Japanese vendor, do i need to pay tax later even when the sellor specified that the postage is free?

Where is the item?  If the location is Japan you will be charged VAT and duty on import by the courier.  Postage is entirely different.
