When is a discount not a discount?

I applied a randomly appearing voucher code that removed £5 from a purchase. It said it had been applied.
I was in a hurry and paid having no reason to check the amount as I had never had a problem in 21 years of buying.
But the voucher was not applied and the chat agent was completely unable to help without the voucher code (which I obviously have no access to now).
Are we supposed to take a note of every voucher we use in case they subsequently disappear?
The chat was very blunt and unhelpful - unlike, say, Amazon. Just saying.
