VAT charged between UK sellers

Can anyone advise me whether this is correct please?   I am a UK private seller and have just sold another UK private seller (both of us in England) a print. When he went to pay for it he saw £135 VAT had been added?? This has never happened to me before, - although he says the last 4 items he has bought off ebay have had VAT added?  I just don't understand?  I am not VAT registered and neither is he. His registered address is UK.

Of course he has now cancelled the sale, so we have both lost.  Is every sale on ebay now going to have 20% VAT added to the cost? - if so it is pointless attempting to sell anything as no one wants to pay that on top of "Buyer Protection" and "Promoted Listing" fees!!

That doesn't sound right.

What's the listing number?

177090256506  - but I've accepted a much lower offer than the listing price.

Okay, so if the buyer sent you an offer then 4% + 75p would be added to that as their Buyer Protection Fee, but that doesn't explain where the figure of £135 is coming from.

Whereabouts are they in the UK?

Surrey - they say the total is plus "buyer protection" and then plus 20% VAT.

It's so hard to help when all we have is "what people say". This may - and should - simply mean that 20% VAT is payable on eBay's buyer protection charge.

If we had the full facts we could at least have had a stab at suggesting whether you or the buyer had overlooked something, or whether eBay had made a mistake.

Without even knowing the agreed selling price or whether it was sold for delivery or collection it's impossible to work out what should have been payable by the buyer.

On the face of it, it certainly sounds like a mistake, but we are not eBay customer service.  I suggest that one or both of you try to resolve this with eBay, then hopefully relist the item as a "buy now" sale at the price you agreed. Let the buyer know immediately you have listed it so that someone else doesn't get there first!

Re: VAT charged between UK sellers

Sorry  -  the selling price was £575 plus P&P.  The UK buyer said that when he received the invoice it had £135 added to it?  I assume that would be "buyer protection" and then the 20% VAT - which seems to be on the total amount, not just the BP.   I did ring ebay customer service after the buyer contacted me about it earlier today, but the chap I spoke to was delightfully vague and couldn't give me an answer other than it is either correct, or a "glitch" on the buyer's account?  Don't really know where to go from here. The only thing I know for sure is that the buyer has now cancelled 😢
