I ordered a hat on eBay, not realising that it was coming from China. When it eventually arrived, it was much darker in colour than shown in the picture and therefore didn’t match my outfit. The seller agreed to refund the cost of the item and the postage if I returned the hat. I did this and was advised to pay tracking which cost £15.25. I did have my original money refunded but was out of pocket for my return postage. So because the item was misrepresented I suffered!
I was not able to appeal the case, for as far as eBay is concerned I have been refunded. Not a happy customer!

You did not follow eBay's rules for item not as described in their MBG Money back Guarantee policy, whereby you would have received a full refund and the seller would have had to have paid for that tracked return postage.
You can ask the seller to repay you the postage cost, but there's nothing to enforce them to do that now.
eBay's 30 day MBG, Money Back Guarantee is written on the right hand side of every listing, link below for you to familiarise yourself with this guarantee, if followed correctly, you'll never be out of pocket.

On the original listing it would have shown LOCATION. If location was shown as in the UK that is where it would be returned to. If it showed as China then it goes back to there.
Did you open a return case, if so what sort, as that determines who should pay for return tracked postage, although getting an overseas seller to pay for return can be very difficult.

You must have overlooked the item location in the listing, or you would have known where the item was located. If it had been in the UK, eBay would have required the seller to provide a prepaid return label.
There has always been some uncertainty over who pays for "not as described" returns to China. eBay can't provide prepaid return labels to China and despite the user agreement making the seller responsible buyers always had to pay this themselves. Quite recently an eBay rep. on this forum told us that sellers in China are responsible for the cost of return and that buyers should contact customer support, who would inform the seller of this. (I don't think we've ever heard of a "test case" to lean the result!)
In any case, I'm afraid that once the buyer has paid for a return themselves this cannot be recovered from eBay.

You're very welcome, no small print in the MBG though, it's all clearly written and easy to follow, but must be followed to a T, that is , never listen to any seller excuse to close a case early before resolution, and not to forget to escalate.

Yep, some sellers will chance that a buyer does not know the rules of eBay's MBG. This seller knew full well they had to pay for that fully tracked return postage but hoped you did not.
Familiarise yourself with the MBG listen to no false promises or excuses from a seller, and just escalate on day 4 after opening a case if a refund or a label hasn't been sent beforehand.
