The red banner asking me to update my account.

Hi.

I’m a private seller and last night after my 28th sale occurred a banner popped up asking me to update my account details. so I did a bit of research and many people are saying that you get this banner when you have done 30 sales or more or if you sold £1000 worth of items. Well I haven’t got to either of those “targets”yet and as just mentioned it was my 28th sale and I’ve sold £936 in value which is neither 30 sales or £1000 worth of sales, so if it’s true that these are the reasons you get this banner then why has it been sent early?

Yes I am close to both limits but the point is I am NOT ACTUALLY there yet so why the banner?

With all due respect I would really appreciate if I could get actual answers instead of people replying with “Yes that happened to me”, etc because, and again with all due respect it’s just not helpful.

a big thank you to everybody in advance.

What is there to update? You would  hardly be allowed to sell without providing the information required, so I think it is more likely to do with WHAT you are selling.

A number of BRAND NEW items, which may suggest to ebay that you  are not a private seller and should perhaps be registered as a business seller.

You would have to ask Ebay your question to get a definitive answer.

This is a member to member forum and that is genuinely a question that other members can only guess, surmise or speculate the answer to.

You are not the first member to ask a similar question - I have seen two othere who have not reached either threshold this year but have been asked for their NI Number.  I assume you don't have another account with a couple of sales this year as this would explain the request.

Re: The red banner asking me to update my account.

They want my date of birth and some form of photo ID. Also in my personal information section in my account details, there is a red notification that they want my NI number!!

I have approximately 120 items for sale and approximately only 10 of those are brand new. I have had to end all of the listings in case I get any more sales because they are not releasing any of my pending funds until I provide them with the information that they want, so I can’t sell and I can’t get my funds.

Also I’m in a bit of a dilemma because the two sales that occurred last night just prior to the red banner, I’m either going to have to post them and not get the money for them or I refund both sellers and risk negative feedback!

Re: The red banner asking me to update my account.

No, I’m I only have one account and I’m not the type of person who would try to deliberately break any rules.

I have since had a call back from eBay and I explained my situation and they said “Oh no, it’s not about your sales, we just need more details about you because the government ask us to “.

I have to say, I am really not convinced by his answer and I’m no further forward.

Re: The red banner asking me to update my account.

That sounds like the anti money laundering checks as the trigger for the banner, and then the NI number bit might always be there, until they have to enforce it.

Re: The red banner asking me to update my account.

I agree with papso22 the photo id is for anti money laundering checks and the request for NI is for when you reach 30 sales or approx £1700 and will stay until you add it or you don't sell another 2 items

Re: The red banner asking me to update my account.

Well, I can’t sell anything anyway, so I won’t be reaching 30 items! And there’s just no way I’m giving eBay my NI number they are not legally required to have it (yet!) and it’s just too risky.

Re: The red banner asking me to update my account.

Money laundering?!! Wow, I’m just an ordinary Ebayer who decided to start selling a few months ago after being just a buyer for about 12.5 years and now I’m being suspected of money laundering, wow, I just don’t believe this! Looks like it might be time for me to sell somewhere else!

Re: The red banner asking me to update my account.

Nobody thinks you are a money launderer!

Over time, all Ebay sellers will be asked for photo ID to confirm their identity.  It may be that Ebay are now adding a request for your NINO at the same time rather than coming back to you in a few weeks or months with a request for that information.

I should add, having a second account would not be breaking any rules.  Lots of members have two or more accounts and anybody could forget that they had sold a couple of items on a different account.

Re: The red banner asking me to update my account.

Thanks for that.

I definitely don’t have a second account, but it just all feels a little bit surreal. One minute I’m happily selling away and the next minute I’m being. “investigated” for want of a better word, when I genuinely haven’t done anything wrong. 😢
