Selling

Have an item for sale via auction and buy it now. Have received a bid, but have been contacted by another buyer who wants to purchase at the buy it now price. They’ve asked me to cancel auction and relist so the can buy it… is this allowed

No,  this is bad selling you shouldn't agree to this.

Inform the buyer to just bid along, and join the auction.

I would advise against this practice as it really annoy buyers. IF you have a bid at auction price then that should be honoured, you never know what the final price may be and have a pleasant surprise.

Whenever we get these sorts of requests, there are two things to bear in mind, the buyer will give you a price in the hope you will play along it also means that whatever price they offer you should generally be looking to see it roughly doubled come the time of the hammer goes down on auction format. We always write to the potential buyer explaining that we will not be offering to them in this format as its unfair on the watchers and other bidders, and if they believe the price is worth XYZ (eg what they have offered you) then they should bid this price.

Most people do understand all of this but there are a few chancers out there.

If this buyer knew there was a buy-now price they must have viewed it before any bids were placed. They should have used the buy-now option while it was available and have a bit of a cheek expecting you cancel another bidder's bid and let them have it now.

You should explain that if no-one uses the buy-now option eBay reverts the listing to auction style once the first bid is placed. If this buyer still want it they can bid for it like anyone else. If they're lucky, they may even win it for less than the original buy-now. If they're not, it may sell for more than this, which is the risk the took by not buying it while they could.
