It's the first time I have used Ebay. I have sold an item for £700 and the buyer wants it sending by courier. They have only paid a minimum amount which covers tge item fit £50. I am worried, if it's a scam, that they will say the item is damaged on receipt and will ask for a refund.

If you listed as collection only stick to that. You can issue a cancellation via the dropdown menu for the item on your orders page. Use the reason "Something wrong with buyer's address", ie. too far away to collect. If they've paid the refund will be issued in the process.
And put their ID on your blocked bidder list:

It's not what the buyer wants that counts, it's what you put in the listing and should have made sure that covers you properly for £700.
