Selling a car for a friend.

Hi,

A friend who isn't tech savvy asked me if I could sell his car for him on ebay motors.

My question is,  are there any tax implications or any other issues of me doing this?

I would not be earning any money from this.

Thank you.

The only problem is that if anything goes wrong, you will get the blame, fees and feedback.

Selling for another oerson can turn into a minefield.

Would be better for you to show him how, then he is taking the risks, for example paying listing fee and selling fee for a start.

Selling for other people often ends in tears. I would strongly advise against this, especially for a car.

For a start, you will be charged a non-recoverable listing fee, plus a selling fee based on the value of the vehicle. So you may not be earning money from the sale, but you could end up losing it.

Have you considered what would happen if the buyer isn't happy with the car or claims that it isn't correctly described? At the very least, you will still have to pay the listing fee - would your friend be happy to repay this? You will also be charged for the selling fee and to recover this you would have to open an unpaid item case against the buyer.

Have you considered what would happen if the buyer isn't happy with the car, or claims that it isn't correctly described? It's you who advertised it, and will be liable to receive negative feedback.

Still worse, what if the car really isn't as described - or proves to be unsafe? I've been there! Some years ago young friends who were visiting one day happened to meet my neighbour and agreed on the spot to buy his car. They paid in cash and collected it the next day. Unfortunately a radiator hose split on their journey home. The husband decided to ignore the engine temperature warning light and the engine was seriously damaged. Being caught in the cross-fire of the bitter dispute that followed is not an experience I wish on anyone.

As advised and for information :-

Using a PC/Laptop > Classified Ads. at £19. 99 will allow the exchange of contact details for viewing and price negotiation over a 30 day period ... set the Start price at or near the price that you would find acceptable ...>>> avoid inviting Offers as if accepted the listing stops and may never complete <<<... just continue to Negotiate an acceptable selling price and only remove the Ad. when you have a definite buyer with Cash in hand or Bank Transfer is safely deposited/confirmed before handing over Vehicle keys/documents on buyer collection. No further FVF selling fee is charged ...

PayPal payments should not be accepted .... CASH is safest so No Payment Holds or risk of later disputes >
