Seller accepted an offer, eBay did not take payment, someone else bought it the next day

I made an offer on a buy it now item on July 6th. The seller accepted. Paypal payment wasn't taken immediately. I went to pay the next day but it said the item was no longer available. Following up with the seller he said it had been paid and sent. It turned out that someone else had bought it via buy it now the next day (after my offer was accepted). I still have Pay Now on my home screen but the item isn't available and isn't in my purchase history. I have missed out on the item and the seller has already sent it to someone else.

An eBay error on a purchase I agreed to has meant that I have missed out.

Customer support is useless because it is not in my purchase history so I can't speak to an agent about it. I have the email that the offer is accepted and it still wants me to pay now.

until you paid the item was still live and open to others to purchase and pay - that's what happened.

It's not an eBay error.

If the seller accepted the offer then you needed to pay for your item, else it would still be available for somebody else to buy.
