(Seller) Item arrived damaged so refunded - how to claim for damage in transit

I have just had a frustrating phone call with eBay for 40 minutes trying to resolve the following issue:

I sold a guitar amp and it arrived damaged.  I contacted eBay and they said I needed to get it sent back to me so I could claim for it being damaged via eBays simple shipping.  I did that and provided the refund.

I then contacted eBay to be told a series of unhelpful things.

  1. The item was fine because it looks OK in the photo.  I told the person that it was the internals that were damaged.
  2. I should report the buyer because they missed the returns process.  I pointed out that they had used it correctly.  This solution was offered several times.
  3. I had sent it broken.  I told them again that it was in good working order when I sent it.
  4. There was someone else who could help but they couldn't be reached.  I asked for them to phone me back and the person told me that they couldn't guarantee that they would.

Unfortunately that's not how seller protection under Simple Delivery works.

Buyer opens a case for 'arrived damaged',  this goes to ebay, not the seller, and ebay handles the refund.

Anything else is not going to work.
