Return parcel might be missing

I was given a FedEx return label to return something (to an overseas seller, in case that's relevant) that was not as described, and took the parcel to my nearest drop-off point which is an automated machine (the FedEx website confirmed that the item is eligible for dropoff there). The barcode wouldn't scan so I tried one of the numbers on the label; the numbers themselves are not labelled but the system accepted the one I entered and opened a drawer so I popped it in.

 

Two days later the tracking has not been updated. I spoke to FedEx and they have opened a "package research case" and should contact me within 4 business days - however my deadline for posting the item ends in 2 business days. I'm not sure what to do next.

 

What happens if FedEx find and scan the parcel after the return deadline? If it doesn't turn up, presumably I am the one left out of pocket? I have let the seller know but there doesn't seem to be a way to contact eBay. Any advice would be appreciated.
