I was sent a defective item. Seller sent another unit which was also defective. I requested a return & refund in a message to seller which they ignored. I raised a return request and heard nothing. Then the request got closed by eBay and I cannot reopen or raise another one.
Seller is ignoring me and I'm stuck in an eBay doom spiral with all their automated "help".
Any idea what I can do next? There is no option to message or speak directly with eBay so I'm struggling to get any movement on a return.

unfortunately once closed a case cannot be reopened.
you could try your payment provider.

Thx. That amazes me, that a return case can lapse without response, be closed, and is then dead.
Should I try the seller once more and threaten with bad feedback? I hate leaving bad feedback and they were so helpful at the start that I wanted to leave good feedback!
Are all my options really gone??

Threatening negative feedback is Definitely Not the right route and could see your account in trouble.
There is nothing the seller can do from their end.
Rules for a case is that the buyer has to escalate after 3 days, if there's no refund beforehand. Never accept a replacement if that is also faulty there's no protection there.
You did not escalate, and with no activity the case will close. This was not the seller's fault.
As explained it cannot be reopened, and another for the same item cannot be opened, otherwise refunds and cases would be never ending.
Turning to your payment provider is the right course of action now for a refund.
