Please can someone explain why I’ve been charged £5.86 to either print off a label or to get the QR code

Because that's the cost of the label.  Were you expecting it to be free?

If you buy eBay postage you are charged for the label.

Buying eBay postage is not mandatory..... yet!  It will be soon, when Simple Delivery appears for Private sellers.

For now,   just buy over the counter postage at your Post Office.

In some cases you'll find it cheaper as Royal Mail charge the same for post going to off mainland UK areas, such as the Highlands and Islands,  Channel Isles, N. Ireland,  whereas couriers will charge an unnecessary excess charge here.

Did you sell it using the current simple delivery system?  There are a few categories that are covered at the moment and they are the only times when the buyer pays ebay for the postage and the seller does not have to buy it.

In all other cases the seller has to buy the postage from somewhere.
