Perplexed by buyer protection fee calculations on an item I bought…

I am perplexed by how eBay is calculating bids and BPF.

i bid on and won an item, but the final total of my winning bid increased for no apparent reason ( no other bids came in) - OK it is only 34p but I am unsure why it happened so maybe someone can enlighten me.

these are the details  -

I had bid earlier in the day a top bid total of 17.78 (inc. bpf) , which on net bid translated to 16.40 ( so bpf roughly 1.38) 

As the listing was nearing the end there were no further bids and I was still top bidder , so in order to secure it I placed an advanced bid of 

21.66 

I was still top bidder with my original top bid of 17.78 … all good

A few minutes later I checked and the high bid was showing a total (inc. bpf) 18.11 and the net amount was now 16.72 (see screenshot) … yet there had been no other bids!

I won the item , total top bid 18.11. 

so , how/why did the amount just suddenly change from 17.78 to 18.11 when there were no other bids ?

If I hadn’t placed a further securing higher bid, I’d have got it slightly cheaper…

It makes no sense…

This happened to someone else the other day, it looks as though by placing a further bid it increases to the full increment of £1 from £35.72,

In theory the bid shown as £36.40 is not a full increment of £1 above the previous winning bid.

No doubt ebay understands why this happens, but the £36.40 bid should not have been accepted, but no doubt is all connected to the bpf and ebay not getting it right.

That is odd, and I have seen this happen/mentioned on another thread too. (probably the same one you refer too)

Ah, thanks, that makes sense , so it was my first ‘highest bid’ that was incorrect as not £1 higher than previous bid.

Doesn’t explain why it did not ‘correct itself’ until I placed a 2nd advanced bid… as there were no other bids , it would seem if I hadn’t placed higher my initial 16.40 + bpf would have won it !

… it does further demonstrate how screwed up the whole BPF thing is 🙄 …
