I recently bought 6 identical items from a seller, only 5 arrived. The weight of the parcel at the post office, clearly shows there only were ever 5 items in the package.
I contacted the seller, who agreed a refund, then dragged their feet for a few days, actually processing it. I’ve just received an amount in my PayPal account that bears no relation to the amount the item cost, and no calculation on how this amount was arrived at.
Previous negative feedback has received very aggressive responses by the seller, and I don’t want to start a war, but at the same time don’t expect to be made a mug of. They have a lot of positive feedback, so I suspect this is just a mistake, very badly handled.
Has anyone any suggestions on how I proceed?

There is not much you can do now.
Really, you needed to open a return through Ebay.
Then, the seller could have offered you a partial refund, which you could have accepted or refused, to cover the cost of the missing item.
Or, you could have returned all the items you did receive for a full refund.
As you have chosen to deal directly with the seller, you could contact them and ask for a further refund.

Only by going through ebay procedures can anything be enforced. DIY is never a good idea on ebay.
