Yes, ebay are the ones who should refund the buyer for non delivery when the seller used SD. The buyer makes a claim as usual under the ebay money back guarantee.

That's true enough. eBay say:
There are several benefits to using Simple Delivery, including:
You'll be protected if the item is lost or damaged from the point the item is scanned into the carrier's delivery network and until it's marked as delivered.
If the buyer opened a claim the refund should have come direct from ebay. If that didn't happen you have a chance to ask ebay now:

Did you tell ebay it was a simple delivery label when the case was opened? They don't usually apply seller protection automatically, it has to be pointed out to them.
It's possible that you if you point it out to them now, that they (ebay) might refund you what you paid the buyer.
