I recently listed a 7 day auction in which only 1 buyer is showing as bidding 4 times (3 times in the last day) at the same value.
I understand this is because he/she increased their maximum automatic bid, but I thought this was a hidden process and just changed the last unchallenged bid (rather than being a new entry on the log)?
It almost looks like the automatic bidding has triggered because of a counter-bid that doesn't exist?
I asked eBay support about it and they said on the phone that the bidding did look hard to explain.
It's an item that I expected to sell for about 50% more, so was unpleasantly surprised.
Thanks, I'd appreciate any insights the community may have.

It is not a 'hidden process'.
Every time your single bidder comes back and increases their maximum bid, it will show as another bid.
So, you can have an item with 2-3 bids showing, still at the minimum price, with only one bidder.
The bid amount shown will not change until/unless a second bidder places a bid, then the first bidder's higher bid will come into play.
