Item returned but arrived damaged

Hi everyone. I received an item back today that the buyer said was "smashed completely" on delivery to them. The showed very minimal damage and after some rather rude messages, I agreed to pay for a return. I've received the item today and it was damaged alot more than what the buyer received. They also had a cheek to complain about my packaging but they sent a fragile item back in brown paper. I do not want to issue them a full refund but I don't know how to go about it. Looking for help from eBay as a seller has as much luck as looking for a unicorn!!! Any help would be vey much appreciated.

As ebay generally side with buyers, you might find it less trouble to just refund and try claiming on whoever delivered to buyer.

Disputing claims can work out expensive for the seller.

Business sellers have to accept returns regardless if items are damaged on arrival,just like private sellers do.If you bought the postage from ebay,then look to make a claim here, How can I request compensation for damage, loss or missing content? – Packlink Help Center

To comply with ebay policies best you look to upgrade your account to a business one as your clearly tading as one.

Go to Account settings in My eBay.
Select Personal information.
Select Edit next to Account type. You may be asked to sign in again.
Select Confirm to upgrade to a Business account.
Specify whether you operate your business as a legal entity or as a sole proprietor and select Continue.
On the following page, enter your business information such as name, contact information, and returns policy. Then select Save.

You can keep your existing listings as a private seller
