I purchased an item using BIN on something that had been listed on EBay for a long time.
The seller only has 17 feedbacks, all positive, but nothing for over a year.
I bought the item on 15th May and sent the seller a message on 16th May. Since then, I've had no response, and no sign that the item has been posted.
I don't know what to do. I'm sure it will be possible to claim a refund from eBay, but I would rather have the item. Is there any way that eBay could nudge the seller, or is it a hopeless case?
It doesn't look promising, given that the seller has made no sales or purchases for over a year, though the item was still listed.

The seller has probably disposed of the item elsewhere and forgotten it was listed on Ebay.
They will have received an email when you bought the item and you have messaged them so it is clear their account is inactive and any attempt to contact them will be futile.
Just follow the correct procedure for an item not received to ensure you don't lose your money.

Some sellers are just bad communicators, some if still able to use Custom Postage for whatever reason, do not mark an item as dispatched.
The important piece of information you haven't added, is what is the last estimated date for delivery.
These are only eBay's estimated and can be a tad optimistic, they are not a guaranteed date, but if a reasonable time passes this date with not item, then message the seller no more, but proceed this way.
Go right of the item purchased, and from More Actions select.... I Have Not Received My Item.
If you are not fully refunded within 3 days, you must escalate the case on day 4 or within 30 days from opening the case, and eBay will step in and force the refund.
Do not close the case early for any excuse or promise the seller may give, and do not forget to escalate.

Thank you both. The estimated last date for delivery is 23rd May, so once that date passes I will set about triggering the "item not received" procedure.

In which case you do have a few more days to wait and as I mentioned it's not a guaranteed date so worth waiting a day or two longer before opening that item not received case.

Well, I keep hoping that it will show up, but it's not looking promising.
