I posted an item first class large letter not at my usual PO on 11 April 1st class paying £3.09 buyer alleges its not arrived . They have been issued with a refund . I only have a proof of posting receipt. It was clearly label written in bold in blue marker pen. Any idea how I can check ~ I could go to the local sorting office. I now know to get everything tracked in future . I've contact the buyer to see if its been delivered as it may have been delayed due to Easter holidays no response

There is no way to track an item which was not tracked . However, even with First Class Post sending on the 11th, yes you paid for a service which should deliver sooner, but I have had second class post ' beat' First class in delivery, so it could well come in the next few days.
I'm surprised though that your buyer was refunded so quickly, opening a case for item not received can only be done firstly, on day after the item's last estimated date for delivery and it gives a seller 3 full days to refund, so the maths here just doesn't add up why refunded so quickly?
End of the day not tracked, you'd be relying on the buyer's honesty to tell you if they receive the item and how to repay you.

Without tracking, there is no way to confirm whether or not an item was delivered.
Is there not a 16 digit reference on your proof of posting? You can check that on the RM website, even through it is not actually tracked, there may be confirmation of delivery.
Otherwise, accept that the buyer did not receive their item and were entitled to their refund.

Thanks for your advice ~ this was last month April I know post was getting delivered late the irony is I considered delivering it myself as it was close by but envisaged difficulties in processing by hand delivery LOL. ~ Its galling not knowing what has happened to it ~ not helped by no response from the buyer a simple no would suffice ~ has it been delivered ~ late ...

Did buyer open a not received case and if do did you refund or did ebay refund? Makes a difference as to whether you as seller get a damaging defect.
You should be able to make a claim on Royal Mail using your proof of postage.
