Glitch in system resulted in receiving unwanted item which I then had to pay for.

Hope someone can help.

I ordered an item by mistake, cancelled it less than 5 minutes later, & received an email saying order had been cancelled.

I then ordered the correct item from another seller. Then later, I received another email saying the original order hadn't been cancelled. 

I contacted the seller, who replied that the system had glitched & wouldn't let him cancel it.

I said, OK, I'll just return it when it arrives.

It has now arrived, I started a return, & the seller has declined to accept it. I'm £56.06 out of pocket.

What can I do?

I assume they are private sellers rather than business.   Private sellers don't have to accept "change of mind" retruns, which this would be classed as.   You could resell it yourself.
