Does Simple Delivery for private UK sellers mean we lose payment AND item if courier doesnt deliver?

Im trying to work out how Simple Delivery will work for private sellers when we only get paid after delivery. My first query is if Ebay's Simple Delivery courier loses the item and therefore dont deliver it am I then out of both the payment (as it is not delivered) and the item (as no info on how to claim compensation for lost item)?

I can see in the policy announcement Ebay says 'You'll (the seller) be protected if the item is lost or damaged from the point the item is scanned into the carrier's delivery network and until it's marked as delivered'  but there is no details on HOW a private seller would be compensated for a lost item. No guidance on how a claim for a lost item would be made or to whom and how long till payment received.  Will Ebay compensate the seller directly or will we have to chase Ebay's chosen courier for compensation when we have not purchased the service directly but through Ebay?

My second query is Ebays says 'At checkout your buyer is charged for the delivery cost and the amount is then paid to eBay for the label' If the buyer returns the item why am I expected to refund the buyers postage charge when I never received it in the first place? Surely Ebay should refund the postage the buyer paid directly to them?  I know Im missing something but Im not sure what it is. Thoughts please.
