Sometimes bidders are UK based but have their account in another country.
Did you communicate with the buyer before you cancelled?
If a buyer bids but doesn't pay, then you should cancel after 4 days using 'buyer did not pay' so they get a non payment strike.
Much more effective than leaving negative feedback.
