Bids changed.

I noticed that the highest bid is what is now paid for a winning item. Previously it was the penultimate amount that was paid.

How long has this been going on ??

Why would the underbidder pay?   Sorry that doesn't make sense.   It's always been the highest bidder.

Up till now I used to pay the previous bid amount.( plus P+P) I discovered that my high bid amount was now the selling price. Rather an unpleasant surprise.

So your maximum bid amount was the winning bid.   That is going to happen sometimes.

Do you want to provide a listing number where this has happened and we'll be happy to take a look for you.

No, you didn't. The winning bid is and always was one bid increment above the previous bid. (But sometimes with rather complicated variations depending upon the timing of bids.)

P+P doesn't come into it. However bidding can now sometimes be affected by the buyer protection fee.

You can find an explanation of eBay's automatic bidding system here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/help/buying/bidding/automatic-bidding?id=4014&st=3&pos=1&query=Automatic%20bi...
