really surprised to find I have been charged fees when in every instance, the fees shown have been £0.00 - how can this happen?

You appear to be using the Auto Relist option !!
Auto relists are treated as new listings BUT ARE EXCLUDED FROM FREE LISTING PROMOTIONS !!
Theefore where auto relist is used....once your 20 free monthly listings have been used up....you are charged when the items relist
