how long is too long?

I posted an item on 24 May.  The buyer needed it quickly and asked, but did not pay for,the speediest delivery, it was a dinner jacket needed for Friday 28th.

On 09 July (yes, July) they have decided that they never received it.  Its a full three piece suit, so not easy to miss - or lose.

I no longer have the proof of posting, I have simply mislaid it.

I know that the seller has no protection with ebay, and the buyer just has to ask and they will be refunded.

I have no choice but to shut both my ebay and paypal account before I lose the money.

How is this fair?

You really to need to laern the basicsabout the Money back guarantee.

Firstly you should have sent tracked, even a small parcel has a tracking number, and proof of posting with this number should be kept for 13 months as Charge Backs can be made up to a year after payment.

When you have read the MBG you will see that the buyer has 30 days to open a Not Received case so is well out of time and ebay would not enforce a refund as buyer cannot open a Not Received case.

However if they paid by Paypal then they have 180 days to open a case, and without the P o P which would show whether delivered or not, you would have to refund and have nothing to support a claim on Royal Mail.

That is the main purpose of keeping a Proof of Postage.
