Where are the available funds?

I sold an item. Ebay tells me that the sale proceeds are now available. Where? They aren't in my building society account. They aren't in PayPal. Are they somewhere else? Advice and guidance would be much appreciated.

Funds only ever go to Paypal

That is what I thought but they aren't in PayPal. Is there usually a delay between funds being available and appearing in my PayPal account?
