How can a seller view an item before purchasing if no contact details can be passed on either way?

the seller can set up their listing to provide their phone number when the bidder clicks on 'contact seller'

they can then arrange to view the item,

but all sales have to go through ebay,

if a seller cancels a listing after their phone number has been provided, ebay will still charge the final value fee
