How horrid for you.
I've had this before and the antibiotics usually begin to make a difference within a day or so and
within two to three days they make a huge difference. They can't pull tooth out whilst there is an
infection, apparently, so they have to give antibiotics to get rid of that before they can do anything
else.
Often the best option is to remove the tooth but sometimes they can do root canal treatment. That
isn't as bad as it sounds and involves drilling out any filling, the nerve (which may well be dead
anyway) and replacing it with some stuff and filling. It sounds dreadful but I've had it done twice
and, honestly, the worse thing for me was the horrid green rubbery thing they put over your mouth
and work through a small hole cut in it (to avoid any infection). I couldn't stand that and asked him
to take it away and do it without. He did.
Hope whatever happens that the toothache eases soon, it's a horrible thing to have that's for sure.

I wouldn't wait till next Friday, if you don't see any improvement by Monday. ((((( cookie )))))

If you are not driving, then a little bit of cotton wool soaked in spirit (whisky, gin, vodka whatever you can stomache) held over the tooth, acts as a anaesthetic and relieves the pain.
I had a terrible time with a wisdom tooth and this really does work.
Hope you are soon feeling better and get some relief!

i found syndol and ibuprofen 200mg taken individually every 5 hours stopped it within half a day, nhs direct helpline advised me, i was using cold water beforehand, hope this helps, good luck, get it pulled

Clove oil helped when I had bad toothache; put some on a cotton bud and apply it to your tooth; it tastes lousy though.

Oh sympathies to you, last August I had the same thing and had 2 teeth out. They can't pull the teeth if there is infection as it could cause blood poisening as the infection mixes with the blood. It should feel better after 3 to 5 days, take the painkillers as well. Don't leave it too long before the extraction to avoid re infection. Mine had cleared up but my useless dentist couldn't get me in for 2 weeks, needless to say it became infected again.

I had a tooth abscess develop on the weekend I took my daughter to London to see Thriller Live. As it was a Saturday morning I had to go to Baker St. to an emergency private dentist. My face had balooned on the one side but he took it out there and then and give me antibiotics, the relief was immense. I had to go to the show with a scarf wrapped around my gob I looked like a mugger lol. I asked my own dentist should it have been taken out and she said there was no problem with him doing that. I sympathise with you, toothache is a nasty pain.

You have my sympathies. I've never had and abcess under any of my teeth but my mum has and she's been in agony.
Hope that you soon get it sorted.

You have my sympathy, i had a lot of problems with my wisdom tooth last year, only problem is i don't have a dentist, just emergency one, as my one had retired.
25-01-2014 6:20 PM
thank you for your tips and messages just had a few hours sleep and hopefully if i get throught tonight the antibiotics will be working and i will be ok til friday.
i have suffered with boils and abcesses all my life on and off but since i was diagnosed with ME they have got worse and now when i am having a low spell they attach my gums or my b##bs so i have lost several teeth over the last few years.
the worst i ever had was a few years ago i had a bad one in the roof of my mouth and it took 2 courses of antibiotics to kill it and touch wood it has never come back..

Sympathy from me too, Cookie, got the same problem myself at the moment! Toothache started in a bottom front tooth Thursday night, after a twinge the day before. Pain was really bad Friday so phoned dentist and got in as emergency that morning, was given antibiotics and bought painkillers, root canal treatment starts Tuesday. Had it before 3 or 4 times, toothache is the worst pain I've ever hade, so concentrated.

Constant pain is just so wearying...I know
25-01-2014 8:30 PM
Funny how different dentists say and do different things.
25-01-2014 8:51 PM
my dentist is brilliant and i would trust him with my life. he has removed teeth with abcesses before.which others have said thiers would not.
root filling is not an option with me as most of my abcesses are in my gums then when they go away they leave the teeth loose.
also he is not supposed to but if i go on holiday or over christmas he always give me a prescription for antibiotics in case of emergancies.
pain killers now wearing off but need to wait at least another hour then hopefully sleep tonight.

Aw cookie, you have my sympathies, there's nothing worse than toothache 😞 Hopefully, your antib's are starting to kick in by now.
As a short term measure, you can mix CERTAIN painkillers ie ibuprofen & paracetamol. You can take either every 6 hours but no more than 8 in 24 hours but by staggering the time you take them, it's safe to take both.
Paracetamol at 12am, 6pm, 6am, 12pm
Ibuprofen at 3am, 9am, 3pm, 9pm
so you get a top-up every 3 hours if needed.
Don't get the ibuprofen & paracetamol combined tablets though as you'll overdose if you still take the in-between doses - hope this might help

If you can stand the taste, pre boiled warm water and salt mouth rinsing helps...
just a flat teaspoon salt , swish it round, and hold over the abcess area then spit out, repeat..
