Is there a Wifi button on it?
We have just got a new one and I thought it was just plug in a go but I went to use my printer yesterday but it didnt work, had to press the wifi button for 3 seconds and it picked the printer up, other than that it is excellent.

Definitely the router.
I know what you mean about Windows 8 being slow - check EXACTLY what version of Windows you are running, there is a newer version - Windows 8.1 and it is worth upgrading as 8.1 is a little but faster.
We have a new router, less than 6 months old, but it is still a real pain, drops the signal at least half a dozen times a day!

Please check your router's spec.
Routers work on a wireless protocol called 802.11 with a speed setting of either b, g, n or n+
Most of the newer routers are n or n+ and are not backward compatable for the old g/b settings.
If your computer/laptop is over 2 years old then the chances are that your wireless card is a g/b card and is not capable of handling the increased speed so it will either fail to connect or keep dropping out.
The solution is to purchase an external wireless dongle that is n compliant,
Install and connect then you should be OK.

Just a thought but have you got a spare microfilter to try? Its a lot cheaper than a new router.
I have just been working through MIL's problems with a BT home hub, she had a virus so we wern't sure whether the constant on/off was part of that or a separate problem. So got it all cleaned up and a nice new paid for all singing and dancing internet security installed, but the hub was still off/on even after a couple of resets. I was just about to brave hours on the phone to the call centre when something reminded me about trying another microfilter. As luck would have it there was a spare one in the router box and so far the connection has been stable, so looks like that was the connection issue.
