Zapping flies - any different suggestions?

Hi folks

Since the introduction of the fortnightly wheelie bin collection, for years now the nuisance with flies has been a right pain, even using bin powder.

I use fly spray, but I'm not overly happy with squirting chemicals into my atmosphere and landing goodness knows where and then the ruddy things go bonkers crashing into everything before they finally expire very slowy somewhere, usually under a heavy piece of furniture - to find loads of bodies when a spring clean is called for.

I've tried fly papers but the only being that every stuck to them was me and the flies seemed to just fly around them with remarkable scorn at my attempts to ensnare them.

Does anyone else have any suggestions which work to either deter the blighters or zap 'em without nasty chemicals wafting around the home?

Fortunately, Bank, they moved as it wasn't only their bins that were the problem and it had become more than distressing with them next door.

It's mostly settled down now as most of the houses are rented and there are some really lovely neighbours.

We've even seen a reduction in cats too, which had become rather a nuisance as we had quite a few that were particularly bad in non-cat gardens and sprainting everywhere.

*elphaba* - that sounds really weird but I might just give that a go.  I wonder how people find these things out.

It would be good to have a larger garden with room for a compost bin, but sadly it's only a wee pocket handkerchief sized effort.

Flush the dog pooh - your life will be so much sweeter.

Are you allowed to do that?

Re: Zapping flies - any different suggestions?

Whyever not?  Think of all the rats living (and dying) in the sewers....

I had five cats once, all litter-tray trained (kids both sides of me) and it took me eighteen months to work out I could do that.

Of course, you only flush a plastic bag once before you learn not to...

Re: Zapping flies - any different suggestions?

we don't flush dog waste (mainly because of the size of it although she doe'snt like to "go at home" she prefers to wait until she's out so we don't have a lot  Smiley LOL  but we do flush cat poo from the litter tray, & also any food left on plate gets flushed too ..... unless the dog gets it  ......... thankfully we have a downstairs loo as I really I don't think we'd bother walking upstairs just to scrape plates

Those fly traps that have the attractant which you add water to and hang them up, seem to work well but they are a bit disgusting when they start to fill up.

Well I never. I wouldn't have thought of doing that but it is a good idea.thgruebelgirl.gif I might start doing that with the garden ones.

Re: Zapping flies - any different suggestions?

I haven't come across those.

I've tried a few solutions - seem to work on the little and medium sized blighters but so far nothing deters or traps those ruddy bomber-sized drones other than the fly spray to zap them.
