Had to call out my local hedgehog rescue lady as I found one of my resident hogs with a nasty wound on it's side just as I was about to go to bed. It's been take to be treated but I'm not sure if it will survive
The rescue lady even had to give it a rinse off in the sink as it had fly strike too, bleurgh. Just hoping the emergency vets will be able to treat it as it's one of my most regular visitors. I think it may even be the hoglets mum, but not sure on that. Thankfully they will be big enough to fend for themselves by now I think.
Got to try and sleep now but I'm a bit strung out with all the drama of it. Bet the neighbours are wondering what the heck we were up to, creeping around with torches! Will let you know the outcome, night.

Dogs and cats and sometimes foxes can cause problems to hoggies. We do tend to get a rather lot of dog attacks in. Strimmers are the worse too. We have a lovely lot of babies running around the garden here this summer. 🙂 Love watching them on our night cam. Took the dog out for a loo break last night and got to see two meterorites. 🙂

Hi all, no news yet on when he's coming back. I'm assuming he will though as this is his territory I'd better get baking if you're all coming for a party lol!
Prickles rescue have had an extremely busy day today according to facebook. I wish I was better able to offer my services as a helper but it's just not possible.
Jules did mention strimmers Pat but I dn't think it was one that did for him. My inlaws live next door and mil says she heard something "scream" outside a night or two before we found this lad injured, so I suspect he was attacked by something. Only wish I'd heard it and could maybe have done something sooner

Another update for anyone who is still interested
Hog is still recovering in hogspital from what turned out to be a very deep wound.
The latest news is he had to go yesterday and have three teeth out due to an absess! They gave him a scale and polish at the same time Treated to duck cat recovery pate as a treat after his ordeal, hope he doesn't get expensive tastes!!

I start work at 6am and 5am on a Saturday, we too have bunnies running along side of the road, gawd, I'm a nervous reck by the time we reach the main road!!! I don't mind getting up early, it's true Ed, it's best time of day is early morning.
mind you, a nice nap in the afternoon sets it off perfectly heee heeee.

Yup whe I say I am going to watch the news, my lot know I am going for a bit of shut eye.
Yesterday morning there was a traffic jam on the road to work, first was a fox strolling across the road then a badger going the other way and then 3 bunnies by the side of the road, had to keep my eyes peeled yesterday,
I think everynow and then everyone should get up at 3 and see what life is about at that time, apart from Sunday and all you see then is drunks!

I'm glad he's still doing ok. Thanks for the update, I hope he really picks up from now (but won't be released until spring I shouldn't think, this late in the year)

Hope he picks up. Abcesses can be quite nasty sometimes. I had one here who was really flat when he came in and it was due to abcesses. But a week of antibiotics and good food and tlc and he was right as rain. Hope your little guy will be too. xxx We give them the recovery food as it is packed full of good stuff for them. 🙂 But we don't keep them on it for long as it does put the weight onto them.

Any news on the hog?
16-09-2013 10:46 PM
Hi ed, hog is still there, living the life of Riley by the sounds of it! The rescue people have been very busy with injured and poorly hogs so I don't like to keep asking for updates
I will let you know as soon as I have any more news, I promise. Thanks for asking anyhow
If you do Facebook you can follow Prickles on there if you want to see what they are up to.

Hi, glad he is still around, I expect they will keep him now with the winter coming.
17-09-2013 9:01 AM
Most rescues will soon be extremely busy with autumn juviniles coming in. These are little ones that don't have enough weight to make it through hibernation. We like the hogs to be at least 600 grams to make it through the winter. The heavier the better. This last winter really took it's tole on some of the hogs. The poor things really have it all stacked against them. If you do find a small hog please put into a box with a towel and a hot water bottle and indoors so it can keep warm and then find a rescue for it. If you contact me or you can contact the BHPS or go onto the Epping Forest Hedgehog Rescue forum then someone will help you find a rescue in your area. 🙂
And if you want to help the hogs, please put some cat food and water down for them. 🙂 Thanks everyone.

Saw a whopper of a hog in next doors garden on Saturday night, thats what made me think of this one.
17-09-2013 11:40 AM
Well well, just had a call to say he can come home!! Excited now, hope he hasn't forgotten us after all this time
He weighs 640g so should be fine to hibernate, just hope our baby is big enough too

Oh thats brilliant, good luck to him, its a lovely feeling when they come home, remember when our bat came back, she still flies over the house everynight and I always say hello. Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
17-09-2013 10:42 PM
Aww, how lovely that your bat comes back for a fly past every night!
Lovely lady brought our lad back this afternoon and he emerged from his snug box of straw just before 9 o'clock.
My goodness, he looks huge Also looks in wonderful condition considering all he's been through! Got a big scar on his side so I will be able to identify him quite easily now.
I think he's gone off to get re-acquainted with his family

Really thrilled that he is back where he belongs. Its lovely to have a happy ending 😄
He might well drop a bit of weight in the first week or so of being out, but I expect you have some suitable hog nosh prepared anyway.
21-09-2013 1:38 PM
Oh I'm so glad that he's back home with you now, I do love a happy ending
We've just got a new hoggy here and I'm so happy. We had one for a few years, but sadly he seemed to disappear and we haven't seen him now for a couple of years. I've still been trying to encourage them into our small shared garden and this year, I seem to have succeeded
We've tried hard to make our little garden wild life friendly, we have some good covering shrubs now that are growing to a good size. The only wildlife that I wont encourage are the birds, I love birds, but with all the cats in our neighbourhood it would be dissasterous for the birds to feed here, we do have starlings that nest in our roof every year, but we don't feed them. I know that our neighbours do feed them so I'm fine with that.
