November the 5th and New Years Eve, - thats it. As a pet owner I find it a nightmare for the three months up to New years as fireworks are going off nearly every night I have been out at 6pm with the dogs and fireworks are going off and I have had to virtually carry one of them home no mean feet as he is a german shepeard cross collie.
Don't get me wrong I love watching them in organised shows.
But time and a place.

A agree with that and also think they should NOT be sold to the public. The should only be for organised displays. It's bad enough having the weekly beach display here in the summer without them going off at any time of the day & night 365 days a year! I also own a dog who gets very distressed at the sound of fireworks.

Yep i totally agree with the above , why cant tehy be allowed for organised events only it would help prevent so many accidents each year too !

I hate them - except when attending an organised event.
I live in Leicester and because we have a huge population of Asians we also get fireworks going off for Diwali. Again they do have organised events which is brilliant but they, like the Brits for 5th November tend to have parties and set them off for weeks at a time and some years ago they were going off right up to 2am. To be honest with Diwali and Bonfire night so close it is possible to be having fireworks going off at private residences for up to five weeks.
I love fireworks but they should be kept to organised events. I pity the poor animals at this time of year. Years ago you only had to worry about keeping your pets indoors on 5th November and that it was....nowadays it is hard to know when to keep the animals indoors. The cat cowers but the lab is fine with fireworks (they are bombproof anyway).
I do wish fireworks could be banned for sale - especially by the supermarkets - Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Sainsburys.

Hear hear - And the amount of money people spend on them !

Don't mind them going off around bonfire night and Diwali etc BUT every weekend evening it's BANG, settle down again, then bANG. It's the local teens just lighting up at random in the street - goes on and off for hours. Nearer the day it is every evening.
You mean they pay for them?. We just assumed they nicked em.

The amount some people spend on them - have seen people spend anything from £50-£150 - that would make a fab night out for many people. Our local LOROS hospital has a firework evening....not sure of the ticket price but about £8 per person....and the display is always fantastic. My son and I could go...have a burger or two as well for about £30....£30 of fireworks in the garden would be a total washout.

Yes and how do they get them eh! not allowed to sell them to under 18's, probably the parents giving them to them to go out and play!
We have a fabulous display for the local hospice it costs £12 to get in and then you can have burgers etc. We don't go though because of the dogs sadly. We tend to stay in with the tv on loud, the young dog doesn't care because she is a gun dog and thinks its all a game.

I also agree with all that's been said. Just hate fireworks unless they are in an organised display. We haven't had any here yet but I've no doubt they will be starting soon.

they should ban bangers altogether, I hate the things.
I'm the same as everyone else, love the organised displays but definitely agree that supermarkets should just ban the sale of them.
We had a dog that loved them though, he would sit looking out of the window and you couldn't get him away! he loved to see them exploding in the sky. He was a Cavvy.....

My dogs are terrified of fireworks; I've tried all the usual remedies, plug-ins as well and nothing works. Also had bird scarers going off recently, which scares them. Time they were only used for organised displays. Don't know how people can afford them to be honest. Some of them are so loud they rattle the windows, so goodness knows what they sound like to pets and wildlife.

I don't usually post here but for this subject I'll make an exception.
I really detest modern fireworks because of the awful noise they produce. If it's a spectacle you want, you can get the same effect without the huge bang. My dog is frightened of them and hides under the table.
The cost is mind-boggling, would you pay £140 for a 128 shot F/W that's gone in 60 seconds? I've just watched a video of it and for £140, if that's all you get, I'd feel cheated.
People who waste so much money on such things must have more money than they know what to do with?
I used to love fireworks as a kid but those that gave me and other kids a lot of pleasure would be regarded as the proverbial damp squib these days.
By the time all the locals have let off all their multi-shot nuisances, you're heartily sick of them, they're boring after the first couple.
It's life Jim, but not as WE know it.
Live long and prosper.

Nah, not round here, Ed. Doubt they paid a penny, parents or kids!.

PS As to noise. Local displays used to be just across the river from mum's. First time there was one of those really loud banging displays one of the neighbours commented her house hadn't shaken like that and she hadn't heard noise like that sine the germans bonbed the docks!.Gather she dived under the stair just in case!. The whole house shook. They have since moved them to another waterfront area.

Love them and can't wait until the 5th November to let them off. No way should they be banned from the public, Organised events are boring, too far away from them, too many jobs worths talking about H&S getting in the way
15-10-2013 9:43 PM
Yup, I agree they should only be at organised events, the general public should not
be allowed to buy them. There are too many selfish people who cannot think of
others and animals and just let them off on 5th November and perhaps the weekend
closest to that date. Also too many total idiots get hold of them and do unspeakable
things leading to injury, sometimes death, to people and animals.
It makes me wild, we have ridiculous and unnecessary health and safety rules and
risk assessments for things which most people can manage to do without ending up
in casualty. However, anybody can buy fireworks which have potential to cause the
most terrible injuries and worse, when in the hands of the stupid.
Ban them for sale to general public, we can go to one of the very well organised displays
run by people who know what they're doing if we want to see them. If doing that saved
one life then it would be worth it, but it would undoubtedly save more.

Having worked in a Burns Unit for many years...my opinion on fireworks is probably unprintable.
Keep them organised if necessary...but also consider the fear it causes to pets.
