There is a concern about a flea product for cats and dogs that may be leathal being sold.

I recently came across an alarming warning about a flea product that is leathal to cats and dogs that is being sold on ebay without any of the side effects or warnings.

Thus far I've read dozens of accounts of cats dying from an application of the anti-flea medication called "bob martin"

and if it is sold here, there should be at the very least a warning.

I'd like to see what can be done about it.

Bob Martins is sold in every supermarket pet section, pet shops & on line. Not just Ebay. If it's harmful as you say it's the manufacturer that needs targeting not just the sellers.

Crikey, that's awful that it's not been withdrawn.  I've used shop-bought

Bob Martin flea treatment for my cats, albeit not in the same packaging

as that shown here.  Fortunately both my cats were fine.  I'm very sad at

what could have happened though, and what has happened to others.

When I last took my cat to the vet, they didn't say it was dangerous, but

did say that the shop-bought treatments were not as effective and

I got flea treatment from vet.  That's made a difference, whereas the

shop-bought stuff didn't seem to.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

I haven't used shop bought flea treatment for years as one of my cats had an alergic reaction and started frothing at the mouth and shaking, we dunked him in a waterbut to wash it off, (on the advise of the vet) then took him to the vets, he was given a steroid injection and he was fine.  We only buy flea treatments from the vets now, more expensive but the treatment lasts longer and it is safer and it works.

I only use the spot on treatments from our vets as I know some of the overcounter stuff can be harmful to our pets. And what ever you do if you come across a hedgehog with fleas, don't use one of these spot on treatments as it could potentially kill them. We have a special treatment that we use for them...... Johnson's small animal flea spray (pump version and not the aresol one) and make sure not to get anywhere near their faces.

The problem with cats is in the nature of how they groom , even spot on flea & worm treatments applied to the back of the neck can be reached by the paws, thereby transferring the toxin by ingestion , even more applicable when two cats are grooming each other. My advice for what it's worth! Vets are expensive I know, but are the better option.

Be careful Rose just because your other cat lives indoors doesn't mean she is free of fleas & worms.

Further to that, did you know just because it says for example, for dogs only, it only often says that because it doesn't have a licence to be used on other animals, & why? Because it costs too much for research to establish its safety on other species, so they target the most profitable animal.

Saasher we run into that problem with looking after hedgehogs all the time. No meds are liscensed for use on them. 😞 Luckily we have a vet at Vale wildlife who has done testing and has published a drug sheet that most of our vets approve of and they will then prescribe meds for our hogs. It is a real nightmare sometimes. Hedgehogs are weird too in that (wild ones not the APH) have a very high metabolism and they actually need stronger dossages than most animals their size. I actually use a horse wormer when I worm them, via prescription from the vets that is.

It depends on your vet I think , some are not willing to take the risk, mainly as you say the dosage a risky business if you get it wrong with a pet animal.
