I got a Kindle Fire for christmas and I'm trying to find some sites that have free books to download. My friends keep telling me there are thousands of free books but when I try to find any on my Kindle, I get one or two mixed in with books I have to pay for?
can anyone recommend a site for me?

once you get into whatever section of books you are looking for, you can also sort them from lowest price to highest, instead of most popular (which I think is the default): then all the free ones come first. Also, sign up for the daily deal, so you remember to check it - these are paid for, but often very cheap indeed: there's a regular fiction and also romance, I think, on a daily basis.
Anything out of copywright (is that what I mean?) is free, sometimes in more than one format, so you can get Kipling, Dickens, Austen etc for free from there (I have just downloaded some travelogues from 1850, which I can't afford to buy as originals 🙂 ) and lots of authors offer their early books in whichever series for free, to get you hooked - plus, of course, all the self-publishers etc and also short story teasers. There's loads and loads on there for free, some brilliant and others leaving you realised you'll never get that hour back - but it's a great way to discover new authors and though I've read hundreds of Kindle books, there's only about two that were real, unmitigated dross...
There are also lots of popuylar books at 77p (which I guess equates to 1USD?), again some from well-established authors, so you can stock up your library for very little. If there's a series you really like, keep your eye on it, as there are often deals on all an author's books - I bought all the Colin Cotterils I was missing on Kindle for £3-4 each, and then the next week they were on at £1-2 each 😞 Kindle's revolutionised my life, as I travel a lot and hated leaving books behind when I'd read them- but it can also be habit-forming!

Oh, also a lot of libraries have ebooks you can borrow for free - at least, Bath and Liverpool do: I don't quite understand how the magic works, mind you, but this can be a good way to get hold of the newer and therefore pricier books.

I will pop a memory stick in the post - has over 6000 books in kindle format on it - just copy the books on to your computer and send the memory stick back. They are in rather a strange order, alphabetic by author's christian names, but you should be able to find something that you like.
It is VERY easy to put the books onto the kindle. Connect the kindle to the USB port on the computer and you will be able to look at what is on the kindle, it just looks like a memory stick, or camera or extra drive.
Once you find the folder on the kindle that has books in it, you just copy and paste (or drag and drop) the books into the folder on the kindle.

Hi Caps, We have had our kindles for ages now and the IPad.........
First off there is a program called Calibre do a google search for it. It will convert most files for you to the Kindle Mobi....
On Ammazzoons site look for the bestsellers tab at the right usually on your screen on the computer....... And then the free 100 bestsellers. Then you can choose your genre.
There is the Gutenberg website that has loads of freebies..... some in Kindle format and others might need converting ie using the Calibre program.
There is also manybooks(dot)com that has loads of freebies too.
The local library here we can download ebooks from using a program called overdrive on our Ipad. You might be able to use the kindle fire for it too.
And there is the OpenLibrary also.
I have my kindle so overloaded at the moment I will never read all the books I have on it. LOL Good luck hun and happy reading.

I love my Kindle, got a couple of hundred books on it now ; also have the app on my smart phone; it's good to sync the Kindle and phone, then whichever device I use, it knows which page I read last. Having said that, it is also nice to hold a "proper" book in my hands for a change, if you know what I mean. Will look at the sites that have been mentioned.

I've been thinking about getting a kindle, but most of the books I read/want are not available as kindle editions or are more expensive than the paperback copy

If you like humerous books, I can thoroughly recommend Alison Kervin's Wags books, very funny.
Unfortinately they are much cheaper to buy in print than Kindle editions.
I do read anything that grabs my attention, much like you can't stand mushy romance, I do like something with a bit of substance.
If you are looking for recommendations I can thoroughly recommend Goodreads - you don't have to fill in all the books you have read to get recommendations - just put in the title of a book you enjoyed and it will give you a list of similar books, or you can browse by genre. A really useful site that has widened my range of authors.
I do wish I'd read the reviews of Revenge Wears Prada before I bought it though, it's dire!
