Well done you, I have tried on several occasions and sadly relapsed, I think because I have been nagged and bribed into it and I know it has to come from me and me alone, but I am slowly but surely coming around to the idea, as I am quite fed up with being Billy no mates and having to stand in the rain (I have never smoked in the house). Also the cost is quite frightenening. And yes I do know what it can do to me.
You go for it Mercs, one day at a time and do it for yourself and not for others.

What helped me decide to give up (nearly 20 yrs ago) was the realisation of how bad I smelled. My breath, my hair & my clothes all stank. It took two attempts but the second time it was easy as my mind was in the right place. I am embarrased now as to how I must have been so smelly. The smell of tobacco on someone now makes me heave!
You can do it Merc. We are behind you.

Well done Merc.
I just don't advise anyone to give up the same way that I did - I was a social smoker when I had my accident - by the time that I could actually get out of bed (4 months later) I was a non-smoker.
I could always take it or leave it, would very rarely smoke if I was on my own, but would smoke if I was with others who smoked. It is 15 years since I last smoked.

Thanks folks...what lovely words of encouragement

'my mind was in the right place'
That was exactly what I was trying to say, well said
My OH gave up when he broke his leg, he was in hospital for 10 days and couldn't physically get outside so by the time he got home he was a non smoker.

Well, I'm supposed to be at work for a couple of hours tomorrow afternoon.I say supposed because it all depends on the state of the office - I stormed out on Tuesday. Whilst I can't walk, it was a superb wheelchair flounce.
I made it very clear that I was absolutely disgusted at the lack of regard to Health and safety in general and fire sfaety in particular. I pointed out somehat forcibly that is is totally unacceptable to find not one, but two fire exits obstructed - the one close to my office had 3 chairs making the corridor too narrow for easy wheelchair access. The big fire doors in the accounts office had boxes of files in front of them, plus it was impossible to get to them because of piles of files all over the floor.
I also pointed out that the regular fire drills don't take place as required.
I have, as yet had no response to my formal written greivance.
I could well be unemployed by this time tomorrow!

Good for you Stroppy - stick to your principles!

It just beggars belief. Surely they are in breach of the law having the fire exits blocked?

They are indeed in breach of the law, but because the able bodied members of staff can step over / round obstacles they just do not think that they are putting the wheelchair users at risk. Everyone thinks that a fire will never happen.
Mind you, I am very freindly with the chief fire officer at the station local to the office ...........

why are there boxes all over?
is it a temporary thing, they seriously need a boot up the jacksey
maybe they could borrow a chair and a pair of crutches and give over an afternoon to otherstaff trying to manouvre the building with a smoke bomb going off

That's a good idea Towery!
Please ignore any odd emails from me as I seem to have some Maleware again sending links on my behalf!

Woo Hoo .... well done Merc, I hope you can manage to stick at it ..... maybe twishy will send you a stash of her chocklit to distract any cravings
Stroppy ... I really hope they sit up & take notice now ........... maybe a phonecall to the fire officer wouldn't do any harm though, what they are doing (or not doing) could have serious consequences if things are left as they are
