It is expensive to knit in nice yarn but you get a lot of pleasure in the making as well as the wearing & your item is pretty unique. I often use a different yarn to the pattern as long as the tension is close.

Re: \\\\Re: THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

I've never tried cable or fancy stitches, but I'm thinking of giving it a go. Any advice?

Re: \\\\Re: THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

Cable can be as easy or hard as you want it to be Mags,

but your better starting with something simple & small, just so you can get the hang of the cable needle.

But if your following a plain pattern and adding some cable, just loosen your tension around the cable area.

but de over ladies will put ya right 🙂

Re: \\\\Re: THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

It's years since I knitted cable.  My two had  hooded jackets when they were about four and seven, they must have looked like Hilda and Howard!:^O  The only tip I can give you is you need plenty of concentration so you don't go wrong!:O

Re: \\\\Re: THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

Just been looking at cable needles and didn't realise there are so many different ones 😮

Not sure what length to buy, and whether to get straight or cranked.
Any suggestions?

Re: \\\\Re: THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

you know when you are knitting, how much space should there be between the knitting (one needle to another) if the stitches are almost at the end of each needle?

whatever i am doing wrong, is something to do with that

sometimes i can just push the needle through, sometimes i need to sort of lift it up as there isnt a lot of space

i dont mean wool to needle, it goes through easily enough, its not tight there

and i now have 38 stitches

i started with 32

Re: \\\\Re: THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

I only have straight ones, in 2 sizes but 3 lengths, so could not say whether straight or cranked, dont know if  they sell them in multi size packs as they would be ideal. 🙂

What size needles are you using, and what thickness of wool?

Re: \\\\Re: THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

I'm using chunky with 4 & half size needles and stocking stitch, there is about half an inch space between needles

Re: \\\\Re: THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

That size needle is very big for the wool merlin, that's why it's very loose and holey.  Here's what I got...
