THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

If you can find a picture of the book 'Scrap Quilt Sensation' I am doing the one on the front cover....but bigger! Trying to use up lots of multi coloured scraps. Merlin will hate it as it's very random! ;-)

What is a fat quarter?

This is one of the most common questions we get asked! Patchwork fabric is usually sold off a 110cm (44") width bolt – a fat quarter is half a metre cut off the bolt, then cut in half again, so it is approximately 50cm x 55cm (20" x 22") in size (a ‘fat’ quarter metre). A long quarter is simply a quarter metre cut off the bolt, so the finished size would be 110cm x 25cm (44" x 10").

A Jelly Roll is a strip bundle of fabric rolled and tied up with a ribbon. Each Jelly Roll has a specific limited edition themed group of fabrics, so they are completely addicting and so easy to collect! Each bundle contains (40) 2-1/2 in. wide x approx. 42 in. long strip

I find it hard to do random too. Have been told to make several piles, then randomly pick fabric from each.

If use a ladder stitch for cloing up the last bit of seam. You bring a needle and thread through the material from inside, then take a stich in the front edge the move to the back edge keeping the thread vertical. Then take a stitch on the back edge and back over to the front. You need to keep all the lines of thread crossing the join parallel. When you get to the end you firmly pull the thread and the 2 seams go together and the stitches look like theyve been machined like the rest of the seam.

Always use good thread that doesn't break easily. It works really well on soft toys, sewing teddy's head on etch and for that I buy a special strong thread. You only need a black and white in that as it's not seen, you don't need to match the colours.

Random is difficult. You will always see a match you don't want after you have sewn it.lol
There is an Amish quilters saying that your quilts should not be perfect as only god achieves perfection. I am not a believer but the saying suits me fine! lol;-)

Thank you. Its a very useful stitch. I was shown how to do it when I made soft toys at home for a local firm, when the kids were small. They were gerbils and I got told off cause the eyes were always looking in the wrong direction. Oh dear, they were so fiddly to make I'm sure that's the reason I need glasses now.

Think I've heard the Amish thing before Maggie.

I tried when doing my small mat to be random. Had to stop myself from arranging the squares too much.
Wanted not to have 2 darks or similar patterns together, but it was hard to leave them.

Being even more random - have just cut my bindings and have gone for green gingham ;)

THE FHG SEWING THREAD :-D

I disappeared last nite:|

so many things going on
nothing very exciting at the moment, its all the prep work
no pretty stuff:-(

I could kiss you Auntie Maggis for the Amish quote

please dont cringe....

i was making the pillow case completely the wrong way
worked out how many squares, laid them out in rows
needed 4 rows, made 4 rows
sewed 2 rows together, sewed other 2 rows together
then sewed them together
did it wrong way round so i have 2 squares the same next to each other, thats why i didnt finish it
i am debating whether to unpick or not

your "random" quilt will look beautiful
but, i would go stark raving bonkers trying to be "random":^O
i do love the random quilts, but even doing what i have so far has brought home to me just how anal i really am, and i THOUGHT i already knew!

Am tempted to use that Amish quote as a sig!!

Finished another ragdoll yesterday - want to put pics on here but understand PB is playing up & has a virus???

Thought of all the new quilters yesterday - saw an advert in a mag for a new book coming out at the beginning of April - Patchwork for beginnners by Sue Prichard (published by V&A) - available on EBAY & other venues ;)
